Maestro Wu Artillery Shell Knives

Fifty years ago, about four hundred thousand or more artillery shells blazed on the island of Kinmen from across the strait. Now, fifty years after, the smoke and sounds of the artillery shells are long gone. The people of Kinmen have, thereby, endured the decades of extensive warfare. The skillful hands of the craftsmen have transformed the artillery shells into the famous steel knives of Kinmen in a way that uses art to wash away the remains of historic events. Maestro Wu was founded in 1937 and now has more than sixty years of history. Located on Boyu Road, it is the most well-known steel knife producing factory in Kinmen. Maestro Wu is a must visit tourist spot and reported by various media.

The owners, the Wus, are continuing on the traditions of the art of metal and farm equipment making that was passed on by their ancestors. The current owner, Wu Tseng-dong’s father, even carried the forging furnace with him to visit customers in various towns. In 1958, the infamous August 23rd Artillery Battle occurred with the island being hit by over 4 hundred thousand artillery shells; on average four artillery shells per square foot. Wu Tseng-dong then started to collect these artillery shells to create steel knives; turning objects of death into renowned and highly-collected artillery shell knifes of art.

The artillery shell knifes’ production process consists of cutting up the shell, smelting, hammering, forging, and grinding and polishing. One artillery shell can make about 60 steel knifes. In addition to the artillery shells from the August 23rd Artillery Battle, the propaganda shellings on odd-numbered days of the month from the years 1958-1978 continuously supplied huge numbers of artillery shells. Wu estimates that the amounts of the artillery shells will sustain the steel knife making industry for at least four to five decades. He even jokes that who would have thought the artillery shells used by China for war results in a gift from the skies?

Nowadays, Maestro Wu’s factory is a major factory that not only sells kitchen knives, farming tools, hunting knives, but also accepts customized orders. Being used to making knifes in the workshop, Wu says that the sparks made by the hammer is just like the sudden disappearance of war’s history. However, the products made from these artillery shells could be said to be the embodiment of both priceless peace and the myriad hardships endured by the people of Kinmen.
